From the Founder

Education has the power to transform lives.

Together, we teach English. Together, we build futures.

ESL United was created from a lifelong commitment to helping people gain confidence, independence, opportunity, and belonging.

When I was young, I knew I wanted to spend my life helping people.

At first, I thought that meant becoming a neurologist. I was fascinated by the human brain and believed that if I could understand how people think, I could help change their lives.

Life, however, rarely follows a straight path.

After high school, I worked as a plumber's assistant. Over time, I became a master plumber, built a successful career, and started a family. It was honest work, and I was proud of it.

Then one ordinary day changed everything. I was walking down the stairs at the Atlantic Avenue train station in Brooklyn, NY, when a single thought stopped me in my tracks:

“What happened to the person who wanted to help people and change minds?”

I realized that while I was helping people by repairing plumbing systems and installing boilers, I wasn't fulfilling the purpose I had imagined for my life.

I went back to school and earned a bachelor's degree in psychology. Initially, I believed clinical psychology was my calling, but I earned a master's degree in Industrial and Organizational Psychology instead. Once again, life had another lesson waiting for me.

While watching a documentary about immigrants coming to the United States in search of safety, opportunity, and a better future, I realized that I had finally found the community I had been searching for all along. I understood that teaching English was never just about vocabulary or grammar.

It was about independence. It was about dignity. It was about giving people the confidence to participate fully in their communities, pursue better careers, help their children, and eventually become citizens of the country they had chosen to call home.

Sixteen years later, I still feel that same excitement every time I walk into a classroom.

To date, I have had the privilege of helping more than 200 individuals achieve United States citizenship.

Every student has taught me something. Every success story has reminded me why this work matters.

When I look back on my original dream of becoming a neurologist, I smile. In many ways, I accomplished exactly what I hoped to do. Not by performing brain surgery… but by helping people think differently about themselves, discover new possibilities, and believe in futures they once thought were beyond their reach. You might say I became… a neurologist without the mess.

ESL United is the natural extension of that journey. It represents every lesson taught, every citizenship interview passed, every learner who found the courage to speak, and every family working to build a better future. My hope is that ESL United becomes more than an educational organization.

I hope it becomes a community where learners are encouraged, teachers are inspired, and every person is reminded that education has the power to transform lives. If you choose to join us, I invite you to become what I call an edu-neurologist—someone who helps change lives by opening minds, creating opportunities, and equipping others with the tools to build brighter futures.

The rewards last a lifetime. And the lives you touch will continue long after the lesson ends.

Welcome to ESL United. Together, we teach English. Together, we build futures.
